Replacement scales..
Hey guys,
I have a question regarding replacement scales. I just recently messed up some scales for my razor and I'm looking at buying some cheap faux tortoise Thiers issard scales to replace them. I don't have all the restoration tool here and I'm wondering if I would be able to use the replacement scales and pins and do it myself ? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

I have the basic tools...hammer, wire cutters etc..I don't have any experience with restoration work though

There is no reason you will not be able to if you look in the wiki there is a whole section on it including tutorials.

+1 on pedro's advice. It is not all that challenging. Read the SRP wiki. In fact, if you wait a day or two there will also more than likely be some additional posts by expert restorers/rescalers here at SRP on this thread who can walk you through the process.

I assume the thiers issard scales will need to be drilled?

i would assume so as all razors pivot holes are in diffrent places on tang. You can work out where to drill the hole using the old scales if you still have them.

Dups,
The TI scales do need to have the pivot pin hole drilled.
As I still very much a newbie to razor refurbishment, I use MicroBolts for the pivot pins.
However, these are a bit ugly, and not as pleasing as a properly done pinning job. They are however very, very functional.
At least I can use the newly scaled razor while I get my pinning skills up to speed :)
:gl:
Have fun !
Best regards

The problem with universal size production scales is the fact that they do not always fit exactly the way you want them to. You might have to do some fabrication work. I suggest you ask the experts, Max and Glen on this one. They can guide you through the whole process.

Well if any restorer is willing to sell me a set I would be more than please to go that way. THe blade is a livi new grind 6/8.

I had a funny feeling that you were talking about your Livi..
I am about sure those TI scales will NOT fit I could be wrong as I have never actually tried it but I don't think so...
There are rules that say we cannot solicit sales in the forum which is why none of us will offer or discuss prices here.. Go to the Classifieds under member services look through the pics, go to the Custom/Restoration Forum, look through the pics there too .. Find a few styles you like and PM/E-mail the maker and discuss your project...

There are many tutorials in the wiki on pinning by the pro's, a little research does one good!

I've used the TI tortoise scales to finish a razor. The set comes with a pin and washer for your pivot and the only tools you'll need are a peen hammer and some flush cutters...both available at Harbor Freight for little dime.
The only thing that needs to be done is that you have to drill a 1/16" hole on the pivot end. If you're cheap like me, go to any mechanic and ask super-nicely if they can drill a hole through them right where you marked. I've done half a dozen this way at different shops and have yet to be turned down. If you're really nice, bring the guy a can of soda for his trouble. IMHO, though, the TI tortoise scales look nothing like tortoise...more like two colors swirled together. Now the Dovo scales look more like tortoise, but I digress. I've also used the TI black plastic and find that they look better as do my Dovo ebony scales. The TI scales will only handle a blade up through 6/8, so if it's larger, you're stuck with making your own.

I'm not going to suggest any particular members to do the job (because they are all pretty impressive), but if I were in your shoes, I'd do the livi the justice of having a new set of custom scales put on by one of our resident magicians
It would be well worth your time and money (in both the long and short term)

Thanks. I've been inquiring with some members, but it seems that they are all pretty busy. I just got the razor and would really like to use it as much as possible. I'm not patient enough to wait 5-6 months to get the razor back. :P
