I've never had it, but there's supposed to be a very typical smell.
Do a search on celluloid rot, there's plenty being written about it.
About the "bad" Bartmann's: see it this way, even if you lose the scales and/or etching for those, you still have a beautiful razor because of the typical spine work.
+1 to the cell rot warnings.
Notice how the "cracked ice" / partially transparent celluloid scale blades were the only 2 that rusted? also, notice how the blade is only rusted in the part that would be sitting inside the scales?
Both of those point to celluloid rot that is causing the rust. Even if you clean off the rust, it would quickly return, as celluloid is unstable and breaks down over time. Transparent celluloid seems to be worse than solid colors for some reason. It emits metal-eating gases from what I understand :(
