    Question Am i cheating?

Admiring all the great looking razor restores here, I have noticed 99.9% have peened pins.
I have just started doing some restorations and used hex head microfasteners. AM I CHEATING?

A decent amount of guys here prefer microfasteners for adjustability... It's preference, not cheating.

    That being said...

    CHEATER!!!

Aesthetically I like peened pins but for practicality the micro fasteners are hard to beat. Especially with wooden scales where it is good to wax the inside to protect them from moisture around the pivot pin.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I have two with microfasteners, and they do get loose, which annoys me. There are pros and cons to each route, but at this point, I prefer pins.

I didn't think there was such a thing as cheating if you're working for your own satisfaction. I can see the advantage of being able to disassemble a razor easily and adjust the stiffness of the action - it's just not for me. They're certainly a boon for setting up. It also occurs to me, and this will come in handy soon, that they enable you to keep a blade in use in a pair of spare scales whilst you make some new ones for it.

Go with what you like. I like the screw pivots for my customs because they allow me or the customer to take the razor apart to clean it. But I've used peened pins, as well. Either work, so just do what you feel comfortable with. My only thing is when I do a restoration, I generally try to use whatever the razor came with originally, so most of the time on a resto, it's peened pins.

To me, the fact that you asked the questions leads me to think that you would rather have used peened brass rods. I Started with microfastenters, thinking peening would be too much work. It most definitely is not. it only takes a few minutes and , to my eye, looks right. I practiced on a scrap of wood first. Only had to practice once. Brass rod is very maleable and easy to work with.
