Is it possible to tighten up a razor without installing new pins?

I've got a couple of old ones that would benefit from just tightening em up. ie the scales are just a bit too loose?

Yes. You'll need a ball peen hammer and a tough flat surface like an anvil, but basically what you do is put one side of the pin on your anvil and GENTLY tap the other side of the pin, making sure that only the pin is touching the anvil. If the scales are touching as well, you'll crack them.

Search SRP for "tightening and pivot", theres myriad threads on it with photos and other advice that will help you on your way. Lynns DVD also has a video tutorial on it.

the only thing I'd add to this is that you should get a very light ball peen hammer (I use a 3 or 4 oz I think). A bunch of very light taps is better than a few heavy taps.

One of the details often unsaid is that the taps need to be slightly off center.

A spoon tapping exactly vertical is not as effective as slightly off center.
If the razor is set on the anvil (side of a hammer will do) and then canted just
a little so the edge of the pin but not the scale is on the hammer/ anvil
then tapping from the top also catches the edge of the pin. By rolling the
razor left right up down all around the clock and tapping with a spoon
or light hammer the mushrooming of the pin/ rivet develops and tightens
the razor. This is not to say that a vertical strike cannot grow the
rivet head. The initial pinning is best done vertical and the ball of the
hammer is key in mushrooming the pin and developing the rivet head.

Those guys covered it, just keep the taps gentle enough that it won't hurt you if you tap your finger just like you are tapping the pin.
