I just noticed today that disposable lighters are a great source of colored acrylic, plastic, carbon fiber, and whatever else. They cost only $1-2 for acrylic ones and $5 or so for a carbon fiber one. The acrylic is usually 1/8" thick or a bit more, although most have a divider piece that has to be sanded down. Just make sure to empty the fluid completely before cutting into it. Each lighter will make about 4-6 wedges.

Try these guys and ask for their sample pack... I am pretty sure they still offer it.. They send a 6x6 inch sample of each color available, gives you about 36 wedges from each piece and they send 5-6 pieces

edit: Sorry just noticed yer in Canada so it might not be such a hot deal... I also found this at my local glass shop and bought 12x12 pieces for less that $2 each

I called US Plastics today and asked for samples and they said they "don't have a sample program." I guess they don't do that anymore.

I bought the acrylic sign colors samples and they are plenty big enough for a set of scales out of each sheet and a good many colored spacers from what you trim off. Here is a set of scales I made for a Case Red Imp.

just a thought ever think about used guitar pick's? after a while the tip goes off and they are useless

Funny you should mention it. The Red Imp has a guitar pick spacer! There may be various materials used for picks, but I wasn't happy with the one I used. I bought it at a local music store just for this purpose. But when I was sanding it to shape, it kinda melted and made a heavy ridge along the edge I was sanding. I had to remove this with an X-acto knife before the final sanding. Maybe there is another type of pick that would work better.

I've used the picks, but they are a bit thin. They would work great to "sandwich" the wedge between though.
Thats a GREAT idea. I use 2 different picks when I play guitar. One is black and one is yellow. On my next resto I'm going to try to do a 3 piece, black yellow black or yellow black yellow (we'll see what looks better) wedge. I'll post pics when I do it.Quote:
