How do you buy your scale material?

Just wondering how people purchase their acrylic scale material. It seems that the stuff from the knife supplier sites are a little pricey for what you get. I found a supplier very close to me but I really can't see having 4' x 8' sheets sitting around my garage as it would seem to take forever to work through it all though after figuring out cost it would be 50% cheaper for the amount of material.

You get on the phone and Beg, a lot, and talk them into 12"x12" sheets and 6" x 1" blocks, that is what you do...

You just avoid acrylic and make scales out of wood like God intended them to be.

If you want smaller quantities you can get pen blanks or what they call jumbo pen blanks from places like Craft Supplies USA - Woodturners Catalog - Woodworking tools and supplies specializing in woodturning. they have lots of variety. You may end up paying more per set of scales this way but you also don't have to buy 20 pairs of scales worth of material in 1 big piece. They also have stabilized wood. There are plenty of other places to. Craft supplies is just one example if you are interested I could give you a list of at least 4-5 more.

i have taken to just buying big and cuttign down but i know that thats not for the avg. maker

Well if I buy a full sheet they will actually cut it for me as well for free ( at least that is what they said ) so I guess if all else fails I can just get them cut into 12 x 12 for easier storage.

If you do have to get a full sheet, you know you could peddle the 12x12's...
