JL's Scales
I have promised I'll make JL a set of scales as a belated wedding present. He is going to get a big 8/8 Friodur or Henckels but wants wooden scales. So I suggested he saves some dosh by getting plain plastic scales and I'll fit some wooden ones for him.
Well JL if you see this here they are. Cocobolo and yellowheart with brass liners.
or Chocolate and Banana:D

Good on yer Tom,
I love experimenting with scales, some have hit the trash can but these are less frequent now.

Gary those are just beautiful. I really appreciate it as does my wife. I will cherish them always!
-
Gary,
Those are quite beautiful scales. I really like how the yellow liners are set off by the yellowheart. A unique design and very cool.

Im having an 8/8 Henckels Friodur shipped right to Gary for those scales. Make sure you take some photos when you get it all together, I bet it will be a thing of beauty!

Applause! Man that's nice. Give yourself a pat on the back and make another set!

BUGGER IT !
A final polish of wax on the beauties and a faint cracking noise. What the....f
Tried just a little tension, crack again....
The butted joints cracking...oh s@#t...
Totally FUBAR.. Sorry JL, back to the drawing board.
One join OK, two...nope...Not only are the scales stuffed but what a waste of nice wood.
You live and learn in this world from experience. You can read as many manuals and watch as many videos as you like but this hands on stuff is the real tester.
I feel like crap right now. JL will be pissed but I can make some more for him, just different stuff so I'll have to get back to my work bench.
They looked great but in reality were technically garbage. So guys, take all your praise back. You were only correct in the fact that they looked great.
To Bill and Vlad I remain your humble servant....grovel......grovel....where's that bottom rung again...

Would a 3-pin setup have stiffened the scales enough to prevent them from cracking?
-
Pin at the spacer. Make an additional spacer the same thickness as the blade as it would be at the 3rd pin area and leave it there temporarily until you are done working on the scales.
Put in a spacer the same thickness as the blade would be at the pivot and use a small clamp to hold it in place at that pivot pin area. Let the cracking happen. It shouldn' be very wide.
Fill cracks with CA and let it cure. Sand the scales to take off ridges. Polish. Then remove the spacers. Install blade, then install the 3rd pin.
That'll be $50... :D
Additionally, you'll notice that's why I try to end materials at the 3rd pin area... just in case something like that happens.

Im not pissed....you dont even have the razor they were supposed to go on yet! Besides like I said...you are only allowed to ship me one package for the two razors yo uare working on for me, this way my wife doesnt get too curious...so you have months to work on stuf lol :)
-
Bill, you must have been reading my mind. I was thinking, why did I have a join where the 3rd pin would be
Thanks for the tips.
JL, don't worry I have one set of scales finished for the 8/8 roundpoint and I'm working in the biggun.
