The only finish I use on burl wood is epoxy resin. It will toughen the wood. I have made nearly a hundred sets in various burls and never had one snap. You can also finish the inside of the scales with thin CA. It will soak into the wood and plasticise it making it even tougher.
LOL I used poly for that reason!!! Must have been a weakness in the wood. Oh well the giraffe won't snap like that!

Burl can be a tough nut as well. I know I've snapped some along the way.
yah it stings a bit but there is always more and I guess the JA Henckles wanted the giraffe bone instead!!
