oops broke the amboyna burl scales...
dammit!!!! I think I made the wedge too big and when I went to pin the blade the tension snapped it!

You can still save this set of scales! This is a perfect opportunity to try a brass liner and a CA finish, just be sure to thin out the wedge to account for the liner. Use the CA to glue the pieces back together, let it dry, attach a brass backing, shape, then finish with CA. Those are too beautiful to toss.

I've already rough shaped some giraffe bone scales for it!!!

The only finish I use on burl wood is epoxy resin. It will toughen the wood. I have made nearly a hundred sets in various burls and never had one snap. You can also finish the inside of the scales with thin CA. It will soak into the wood and plasticise it making it even tougher.

Wow sorry to see this. Today must be the day to snap scales. I snapped a pair of Midnight Purple Poly-acrylics pinning them today too. I feel you man, well sorta. That burl cost a tad bit more than the poly no doubt. I think mine was a failure in the material manufacturing process though.
Burl can be a tough nut as well. I know I've snapped some along the way.
