Default Is this worth the time?

    Hello All,

I have taken to filling my lunch breaks by wandering around antiques/ bric-a-brac shops, looking for pipes and razors. Last week I picked up two razors in a bit of a rush without having a proper look at them. One was a Puma which has a few nasty nicks on the edge and looks unsalvageable, and the other is (hopefully) pictured. Its a joseph Rogers, stamped England between the makers mark and tang and looks to have been ground. I just fancied a weighty Sheffield razor so took a punt, looking at the blade there is a mirrored bit in the centre with what look like grind marks surrounding it. The edge is good with no nicks, rust fractures etc.

So what I was wondering, is this razor worth the time to try and hand sand and polish (as a beginner) and possibly get honed (by a professional, or charitable person). Also is it supposed to be a wedge or has it been ground from something else?

Thanks for anyones time in response!

Looks reasonable enough. If you are going to handsand and polish, you might as well hone it yourself.
It may take a couple of times to get it right, but then you'll be able to say you did everything yourself and save yourself some money in the process. It's not like it is rocket science

    I would think he's worth.
Buy sand paper, from 60 to 2500 grid and a good polish. (Maas or something)
remove the pin, and to work with this razor.
You will see when he starts to glow, there is a smile on your face

Being in the UK I've not come across Maas so after sanding I would recommend Autosol polish which you should be able to get from your local car accessories shop.

I agree - I would polish it up and keep it.
If you look on eBay you can get a set of micromesh sheets, up to 12k, for around AU$10 which will help along the way too.
Let us know how it goes.
Hang on and enjoy the ride...
