Yesterday was the best day to find another something to do...
This is a monstrosity of unusual size, with lots of effort put into production and so far it's coming out in a lovely shape. I'd say $1100 but only b/c Josh's a friend :D
Now c'mon...the one guy who voted for $100-150 is either joking, or smoking a white rock-like substance. :D
I'm not voting. Your dollar amount is not low enough for me. Bill, as much as I have admired ALL of your other work, this razor just does not work for me. It is just too big. A Frankenstein. I know that you have probably poured blood, sweat and tears in to making this razor. But give me a beautiful 6/8, 7/8, or possibly a 8/8, which I haven't tried yet, and I would be happy. I just can't get into this one. No offense to you or Josh. It's all about personal preference.

Even with that, there's still all that gear that you bought that needs to be paid for eventually. I'm afraid to ask how many tens of thousands it cost you. As for my estimate, I was typing my post before you posted the poll, so I didn't know the price ranges you had in mind. Just one question. What about 1100-1200? :D
This is very hard to judge. I love the design and the scales look great but how do you put a price on a piece of art? It's what the market will bear. It's kind of like saying how much do you think the Rembrandt is worth. Tough question...
Josh it is a girlly razor with the Brittiney Spears picture on the pink scales surrounded by sequins.:roflmao
Cost X2 =350.00
Plus labor hours worked 22 Hrs X90.00 Per Hour+1980.00
Cost materials 350.00
$2330.00 minimum
Best Regards Gary
Before I vote I 'd like to see a picture. Where can it be found?
About a half dozen threads down. "JOSH'S CHRISTMAS PRESENT, no peeking..."
It's the reason why steel prices have been fluctuating on the Asian markets recently. You'll understand when you see it.
Who says pink can't be a masculine color?!?
Good grief what a monster. What is he going to do with that blade?
Instead of nicking, he'll accidentally behead himself.
Anyway, I voted 800-1100 because I have no idea what (if) you charge by the hour on this one.
Edit: I just thought of crocodile dundee: That's not a razor! This is a razor!
I voted for $500.00 to $700.00 with the
higher dollar amount in mind.
Extremly difficult to put a dollar amount on
someone elses work.
So many factors to consider besides cost of
materials.
Bill's name alone is worth more than the materials.
Then throw in his knowledge and skills that turn
these raw materials into this work of art.
After considering all this, I should have gone
higher.

As others have said, what is it worth to have a one-of-a-kind razor (or anything else for that matter) that has been hand made by a master craftsman specifically for you. From this standpoint, the razor is priceless.
However, the reality is that we value things in terms of $ and from that perspective - I can't value this from a time and materials perspective, as I don't know what Bill charges by the hour for something like this or how much time he has invested. This should really set the value or provide a baseline.
There are simply no comparisons on the market however, if a Maestro razor in 8/8 costs something like $800 with a basic handle, then this is worth at least $1,200 (not because of the size, but because its a one-off and there's more scrollwork, inlaying the gems, etc..) - I actually think $1,200 is too low and that T&M is the better way to go for custom work of this nature. However, for the reasons stated above, you can't put a real value on this - and I suspect Josh wouldn't turn around and sell this razor to someone else for %50 more than he bought it for if they offered it to him.
I'm with RT regarding the fact that this razor has no value to me for the same reasons voiced by RT. However, to Josh or others who would like to have something like this in their collection, its likely priceless.
Bill - can you give us an idea of what you charge by the hour for this and how many hours you have in the project?
While I have no desire to own this razor, I am impressed with the quality of the workmanship beyond words.

Bill,
You'll notice it was about 1:30 AM when I replied, and yes, value and cost are two different things. I wasn't totally awake, so as far as value, I go with $500-700. The razor is certainly unique, and a lot of "Bill" has gone into it. That is definitely worth something.
RT
Bill - I figured it would be something like this and I'm sure Josh knows that, whatever you charge, its less than he would pay if anyone else was making this for him.
I suspect (and hope) you don't tell us what the final price is - largely because its none of our business!
Do you know if Josh actually plans on using this on a regular basis?
Assuming it is, I think 12/8 is a perfect size as Josh will never have to worry that honing will ever cause the razor to be less than 8/8!
This is why I don't vote in these threads -- I can't differentiate the two. :hmmm:Quote:

1.You know Josh.
2. How often do you make a razor like this.?
3.The enjoyment of the gift your making, and the response
4.The Kick at some point you got from doing this..
but to name a few....when I buy a hand crafted item I dont mind paying a little more for it as usually its one of a kind, like that razor, and its awesome and Im sure will be appreciated, that alone is priceless...a bit big for my heid...lol...but id hate to put a price on it, and at the end of the day Im sure you wouldnt have done it if you didnt want to, then price goes out the window...:tu
well there you have it, about as much use as a chocolate fireguard....lol

I think given the amount of handcrafting that went into this (The whole bloody thing!) and the fact that it required as much steel as the Empire State Building, it's probably reasonable in the $800 range.
Should Josh be jumping for joy? :)
Well you know that old saying, you can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time yada yada yada well you can't fool me Bill, its obvious to me you just took some old Bowie knife you had hanging around and cleaned it up and did a little trimming and now your trying to pass it off as this custom creation.
If you luck out no one will learn your secret here and you can soak Josh for thousands. Just tellem its a museum piece. Alternatively you can charge by the weight that monster has got to weigh so much I probably couldn't lift it to shave with!
Without viewing the whole finished monster I'm only judging on the photos so far like everyone else, but I don't think even the wildest most exclusive razor should cost as much as $500 unless it's gem studded or something like that. For that reason I voted $500. Part of me thinks it's worth $1,000 or more like the best Maestro Livi's, but that's the insane part.

Value....hmmmm.. it is an original design that has been very well thought out and the execution of the design is excellent.
Based on what I have seen custom knives go for and based on your hours worked I would think that $1200 is a very low value.
This is a piece of original art work, and as usually happens the artist is seldom compensated adequately for their efforts.
But... your stature in the straight razor world has and will continue to rise... and it should.
Very nice work!:)
Ok, after having reviewed the final product I am publically changing my mind. :D And my vote. I'd say it's definitely worth more than $500 on the open market. Maybe even $700 or $800. Maybe MORE! It's like owning a Picasso this thing. Josh is bound to be proud to have it.

I've seen a 700+ € (so that's more in $ :p ) new straight razor recently and it was just plain looking in comparison to this Bill Ellis Original 10th Wonder of the World. If I can ever afford such a thing I know who'll make me my heritage razor. :)
I had to go with the $1,100 - $1,200 range simply due to the hours involved and the experience it took to craft something like this. The ATS-34 was the only thing that kept me from voting $1,200 +, I simply prefer high carbon and tool steels. Now a nice Damascus pattern along with the mosaic, burl and embedded gems -- $1,500 easy.

So will we find out how much it really cost? :D
Will this razor be more or less than the gross national product of Zambia??!! Tune in next time.. Same time.. same channel! :D

Nice looking knife Bill..... :tu
Terry
At least he didn't ask for his nickle back
In reply to your questions:
yes I will be using this razor, but obviously not as a daily shaver, more for some of my lazy weekends when I have lots of time to shave and want it to feel really special.
No I would never sell it no matter how many thousands I was offered, I get very sentimental about things, this one will be handed down once I am in the grave with strict instructions that it is not to be sold, but should remain in the family as an heirloom.
I would rather not state what we paid for the razor, but Bill did me a huge favor, and he is correct that I am/was not fimiliar with custom prices. After hearing the mount hours that he put into this razor, I almost feel guilty, but since we couldnt have afforded anything more than we paid, I am glad Bill agreed to create the razor for me.
As far as the design, Bill went over it with me for a while, making SURE this is what I wanted as he was not sure I would like a razor of this size (he is wrong I assure you). The size was my idea that Bill was kind enough to accomodate, but certainly warned me that this razor may be biting off more than I can chew.
As for the steel, I requested stainless.
As far as what it is worth, it is priceless and I will be remembered by future generations of my family partially by the razor. It does sound like Bill surpased my expectations and list of "requirements" and turned this razor into a work of art and a labor of love. I did tell Bill that he could take many creative liberties and I am pretty sure some of the details and craftmanship were Bill's idea, and probably part of the reason projects like this should be priced at the end instead of the beginning, but lucky for me Bill was kind enough to work around my budget :bow
Well only about 806,000 more seconds till I get to open it :tu
Someone might see that blade many years from now, many many years, and think "what the..? thats amazing!" and wonder what caused it to be designed and... actually created.
Not all of the swords created by the masters had purely practical reasons for their production. Some of them do survive as a testament to something else. Really nice work on that one.
