What material to use to replace grindshaft

I have an old grinder that I am debating changing out the shaft for a longer one. Any suggestions on where or what to look for? This is an independent grinder that is belt driven so no motor problems. I have seen mention of getting drill bit shank? Currently it is 3/4 on the ends and slightly larger in the center that allows for easier time punching out the ball bearings.

If pictures would help just let me know. Currently it is all apart, finally, it took multiple days to break down such a small grinder hub due to years of use.

If the shaft is one diameter I would say drill rod, If the shaft is several diameters or threaded I would think you would have to have it made at a machine shop.

Ditto what Charlie said. Drill rod is usually O-1d. I think the reason for the larger diameter in the middle is to keep the shaft from wobbling back and forth. I'm not familiar with any machine shops in south Minneapolis - grew up by Pearl Park.

Randy was telling me about this when we met right before he got this together. Looks good! I am looking forward to putting this grinder together, I have a lot to learn from hand sanding still but hope this will come into my work eventually. I will get some pictures up as I go, one of all the parts lying around too.

You may want to go to the home shop machinist blog. You may find someone in your neighborhood that has a small shop at home. Most of us are happy to help by making much needed parts . Also my suggestion for a shaft material would be 4140 heat treat. I have used tons of this stuff for shafts for agricultural equipment and heavy industry. Hope this helps you out!
