Tim, thanks for giving it a try. I don't regard it as a total failure. The result is interesting.
It did spark an idea tho.....The first thought was Mokume Gane. Welding together dissimilar metals much like pattern welded Damascus. So, now the thought occurs...what if a number of very thin layers of different colored metals, brass, stainless steel, nickel content steel, copper etc were stacked, heated and forged together into a piece of flat stock. Then cut to scale shape and run thru your laser?

or maybe since wood worked so well how about layers of different colored wood veneers.
I do have a bunch of veneers laying around............

The metal would be very interesting, but you would need a different kind of laser with some where in the area of 300W or more. $XXX,XXX.OO , not in the budget this year. :)
But the wood veneers might just work. Only concern would be the effect of the heat on the glue, possible separation problem.
Now I have something else to put on my to do list.

4th thick wood layer as a backing
just engrave down to the brass
