Thread: Polishing Compounds Vs Greaseless Compunds

Can someone tell me why use Greaseless Compounds for restoring SR and not Polishing compounds other then the larger, softer amounts for Greaseless ?

Do you mean greasebased vs greaseless?

Well this forum wont take a three letter answer. Yep !

I like them both, the grease makes them stick good so the paste can do it's job without have to be reapplied all the time,
but, and at home it is a big but, they are a pita to clean off.
Ultrasound and 80 deg C ammonia is good to have around.

I haven't found any greaseless that sticks as good as the greasy type.

There is some new ones that are oilbased that cleans off with normal wash up liquid.

OT I know, but it reminds me of my wife talking the ear off a partially deaf old american gent on a coach in Italy (he had just informed us as we passed Monte Cassino in a voice loud enough for the whole coach to hear that '..the last time I saw that place I was dropping bombs on it..." - italian driver and guide were not impressed). He had the grace to look as if he understood what she was saying, then when she paused for breath he said '...lady, I don't understand a damn word you're saying...' I enjoyed that, and the look on her face, immensely.

The buffing compounds are for shining up the steel, they are not going to remove steel from the blade. The greasless are much more aggressive and are used to remove steel.

Well, I got them both in all grits, some are quite aggressive, I guess it depends were you shop and what they have.

What do you use?
Buffing compounds are fine compunds for coloring the steel, greasless compounds are in essence sandpaper in some kind of resin that melts under high temperature and allows for it to stick to the wheels.
What grit ratings are your buffing compounds? Black emery, white rogue etc?
