Alex’s method is more of a half laps/knife technique, where you begin with 20 continuous laps on one side, then 20 on the other, then 10,5,3,2, and one.

You do get a burr on the first 20 and 10 laps and then polish it out by alternating sided, reducing the number of laps and the amount of pressure on the lower laps.

On a 1 -5k you can easily set most bevels with a single 20-1 reduction (41 lap) set, depending on the condition of the bevel and grit of the stone.

You are actually doing 41 laps per set. You can reduce the number of laps as long as you do the same number of laps on each side and use a progression, reducing the number of laps by half on each reduction. I do a 10.5,3,2,1 to finish and single laps as needed.

I often use it to set a bevel, then switch to regular alternating single laps to finish. Really any combination works.

Here is a Video of Alex using his system, he calls it the

Very interesting - thank you for taking the time to document the process.

I've not had any luck finding out more on the "Alex Gilmore’s method" - if you could point out a link I would be grateful.

Like others I was in a bit of a shock reading this - I have to admit that what came to mind was the thought "use your 12K Nan like a Coticule"

    Looking forward to the updates...

Edit (Sorry, I missed your post #11 in all the excitement)

I also use 2 layers of tape for the circles and the first 2 sets of half laps, then switch to a new single layer of tape, as I eased up on the pressure.

I also refresh the stone face before doing the final polishing laps.

It would be interesting to study the effects of a loaded up stone on a bevel.
So it's no magic - this stone needs to be refreshed quite often, especially with job like that. I don't like that aspect of superstone too.
Maybe use of slurry during bevel setting wil speed things up and prevent clogging?
