Thread: How did barbers hone a wedge in the olden days?

The other day my barber gave me a GB Anchor razor. I looked at it today and wondered how barbers in the olden days would have honed them. It is a full wedge. Nowadays we use electrician's tape on the spine but sticky tape did not exist at the time these razors were made and used. Any thoughts?

A lot of the wedges show the spine wear,,,, I doubt they noticed or cared as much as we do now.

When you say "full wedge" do you mean absolutely no concavity to the grind as in flat?

No honewear at all on the spine, cutting edge has been sharpened with some coarse tool.

Yes, to see a photo of this razor.

Mine is more of a quarter to half hollow, I knew mine had obviously been reground...I have the leather pouch it came in along with the rather large elliptical coffin box the leather pouch fit in as well...they are beautiful razors and a shave beautifully.

Now that would make it a rarity according to what a few knowledgeable members of this forum have written. Looking forward to seeing the photos. I believe Glen may have said that such true wedges might have been honed with the spine elevated off the hones similar to honing a knife. I hope Glen will chime in on that.
