Thread: Had some fun with my Metal scope today ...

Today was interesting. I used my metalurgical microscope for the first.

I had sent it in to be cleaned and repaired but one problem needs to be fixed. The light brightness control stops function after a period of time. So, I had to us a supplemental light source to obtain decent images. The eyepieces are 10x and the objective lenses are 5-10-20-40-100. So the total power is 50-100-200-400-1000.

I tried all but the 100x because it requires oil on the lens and it used primarily for looking at the grain structure etc of a metal sample.

However, The optics are very clear! I found that the 400x power gave me a view of just the edge with very little of the bevel. But the detail on the edge was very good.

The 200x was far more informative than the 400x. It gave a greater perspective of the whole.

The 100x was also very good. It will be sufficient for most of my honing needs.

The 50x had the best resolution I have ever seen on that low of a magnification.

I do not suggest that you run out and buy one. It is unnecessary for standard honing but is very interesting. I have about $700 into it so far. Here are a couple of pics from this evening.

Looking forward to photos of an edge at 1000x. Mine look scary at 30x...

After looking at an edge at 400X I almost decided to grow a beard permanently!

There are lots of fun moments ahead for you. Can you give us some more specifics about you microscope and your lighting source? The brand and model number of the scope so we can search on the internet to read more about it and see some examples, and is the light source self contained? Also what power is the camera going to be? Long gone are the film cameras and all of the digital cameras add magnification, mine add 15x. Is your microscope an inverted type where you are mounding and looking at the sample razor from the underside as it lays mounted on the stage??
