Default Will it ever shave again ?

I have a Clauss that has had the edge ground, whether to take out a nick, or for some other, more diabolical reason I'm not sure. Anyway, it has been blunted thoroughly.

I am working it on a 1K Norton, and am starting to see a bevel, but the edge is still blunt. Under a 100x scope, it looks like a flat plane perpendicular to the blade.

Will I ever be able to regain a shavable edge, or am I just wasting time sharpening a letter opener ?

How much was ground? Did the re-grind go into the belly of blade? It my have lost it's temper due to excessive heat during the grinding. It's hard to say for sure without the blade in hand. But you just might have a classy letter opener.

It wasn't ground back into the belly. It looks like just the bevel was taken off, or maybe a bit more.

Oh well, I only paid five bucks for it, and think of all the good honing practice I'm getting.

Seems a shame, though. The blade is otherwise in good shape, with only a few small pits high up near the spine, and almost no hone wear - well, at least before I started there was almost no hone wear .

I don't know about the temper, though. There wasn't any heat tint, but it may have been cleaned up.

Without seeing the edge myself here is a thought…

If the edge is flat, then even if they used a powered wheel, the grinding may have removed the edge so fast that tempering would be minimal if any.
Try a lower grit stone or w/d sandpaper to put back the bevel, this will also remove enough material from the edge to include any steel near the edge that may have lost its temper.

Now if they tried to put a bevel with that wheel, then you may be out of luck because... more heat and quite a bit of the edge would loose the temper (and of course they would clean it up for the ebay pix).

It’s also possible they just “sawed” the edge on a sharpening stone and there would be no loss in temper. Only way to find out is to just hone up the blade, shave with it and see how long the edge last… may just be a great shaver.

How much work on the hone have you done so far? It can take longer than you might think to get a good bevel on the 1k. Keep trying I'd say. You might not know until you fully go through all the honing and polishing to get a nice edge. Just remember it might take longer (doesn't mean it's a bad razor) since all razors are NOT created equal!

Well, I worked on it for an hour or so this evening. I have a bevel started, I just haven't gotten it all the way to an edge yet, although it is getting closer.

If I had to guess, I would say that it was ground on a belt sander, because the edge is almost perfectly straight, and the grind marks ran lengthwise along the blade.

I set it aside for the night, because tonite is Shave Night, and the other razor I got with this one was up for it's debut.

Yes, it will shave again when it is properly honed. Just keep at it.
