    Default Honing this Wedge

Sorry to jump around with this but I really want to use this Torrey, I think. A gentleman here in Canada told me it's for someone to use on you, alluding to purpose in design. But it can be used by yourself?

That said, one side is decidedly flat. How do you hone it? Do you hone the one side that has and angle/hollow, counting your passes then tape the other side? Setting the bevel, how much tape is allowed, well advisable maybe a better word on the flat side? Do you hone the flat side or just the hollowed. If yes, then will the edge crumble having only one side of the blade honed? Help.

Yes I will send it out eventually, but I want to learn how this is done for myself first.

    Any guidance would be appreciated.

    Kind regards,

It's hard for me to see in that picture, but I'll take your word for it that one side is wedge and one side hollow.

In that case, try looking up how to hone a Japanese razor, because they are ground in a similar fashion. As I've found, sometimes when honing on the wedge side you may need more pressure than usual, but it depends on if it's only partially hollow or a full wedge on that side.

If its flat on one side and hollow or wedge on the other its NOT a japanese type razor. Torrey never made any such thing. It sounds like a medical razor. They had one flat side and one normal side and they are NOT designed for normal shaving but for cutting sections of skin and or other medical work.

Yes, Bigspendur is correct, what you have is a "section cutter." They are used to slice extremely thin and clean pieces of any specimen you want to examine under a microscope.

Clean it THOROUGHLY before using it, if that's what you intend to do.

Thank you gentlemen., scary thought to put a barber's notch on it. It will end up in the case under observation until I figure out what to do with it.

    Kind regards,

That is an unusual grind. I'd think it would shave fine (Torreys generally do) but might be a bugger to hone.

As mentioned, if it is an old medical razor, proceed with caution but again, Torrys should shave nicely.
