    Cool

I think Matt321 summed up most of my questions. Did you get in your 30K yet Icedog? That box you made for them is very nice, maybe he will want you to do a limited run of them and you can sell them for extremely exorbitant prices to people with lots of money!!

Thanks TJ! Tuesday afternoon I will tabulate the questions so I can be sure to address everyone's concerns, but I just this evening got another nice surprise. Harrelson Stanley will be teaching a Shapton sharpening class on July 12th in Norwalk, CT and I have been enrolled to audit the class and assist as necessary. How cool is that?

Very cool. Let us know how it goes! I guess they call Harrelson Stanley "Hap" as a nickname.

Hey, that may be possible. I will be meeting "Hap" next week. The class will not be until three weeks later. I will discuss the possibility of recording his class. One problem I see right up front is, I don't have any sort of video recorder (other than the little thing in my digital camera)

While we wait for our own official answer regarding the Japanese grey hones, here's some more feedback from the big meet on the weekend where Shaptons were demonstrated.

The whole Shapton kit was out for demo and it's just fantastic. The flattener was a breeze to use, the ponds make a good base, and the holders do their job well. Can I afford it? HAHAHA no way. I'll buy more glasstones for sure though.

By the way he had the new gray stone in 4k and it did seem a little different. This is the one meant for the Japanese carbon steels. I'm no expert, but I would say the overall "feel" of it is different compared to the regular glasstones. It seems to "feel" a bit more like a standard ceramic stone, but it definitely cuts like the other glasstones. I ended up accidentally sharpening an SV30 knife on it, and it was not really a good match.
This is a link to thread where the quote was taken from on knifeforums, 5th post down by Potato42.

Now I'm beginning to wonder if the grey hones might be better for carbon steel razors? Not that it matters really, I've got modern and old steel razors so I'm sure I'll be happy with the white hones.

So I had a nice dinner with Harrelson Stanley and his nine year old daughter and my extrovert girlfriend. While we had alot of laughs it was impossible to have any tech talk of any kind. I encourage anyone who can make it to the July 12th Shapton class: Shapton

But that will be a better forum for Q & A.

Keep in mind that across several industries the Japanese have two distinct product lines. One for the domestic market and the other for the world and usually the best stuff goes to the domestic market. That's just the way they do things.

I guessed as much, that's why I got the Japanese ones through the B/S/T forum here.

I am sorry to report the sharpening class originally scheduled for this Saturday has been cancelled. I was the only person enrolled.
