    Thumbs up Heavy bevel action

    Work in progress....

    Old W&B "Diamond Edge Razor" wedgie. Standard sand it down, and hone 'er up...left the hollows with 400grit satin finish to highlight the bevely goodness.

    The bevels are 1/8" wide each, no spine taping for this grand old lady.

    Went out and got a diamond 1200grit hone for this one, as it is quite a bear trying to blast through so much celebrated fine India steel. As a side note, you really MUST break in a 1200 diamond stone on a chisel flat or something, or it will eat your razor's edge alive.

    Or so I hear..

    Just take the brandy-new 1200 hone, and a chisel, or other such hard, flat metallic object and rub that hone with the chunk-o-steel until it is no longer leaving a very flat matte finish, but more of a satiny-shiny finish.

    Not quite there yet, but getting close.Finished down to 3um on lapping film. Cutting HHTs pretty smooth, but I'll wait til I put the scales on to really put the final shaving edge on her...

    A "before shot from EBaah:



    Razor was in pretty good shape, but the edge bevel was really quite rounded. Nothing that a little elbow grease can't fix!

    I couldn't take it any longer....
    I slapped on an old set of plastic scales from my "discard" pile, and gave this bad Larry some pasted hanging strop action: hit up the Dovo Red, 1.0 micron diamond, and then the Chrome Ox. Followed up with the TM starter strop, and it was silently felling hairs on the back of my hand like trees in the forest when there is nobody around to hear them fall.

    Of course, I overslept this morning, so I had minimal beard prep time available before the kids woke up. Quick splash of hot water on my face, some Seraphim's Secret Shave oil on my mug (that is to say--my face) and lathered up the Tabac.

    Even with crummy pre-shave prep this razor is a champ! Nice and smooth, hefty in the hand, and the jimps are quite serrated for awesome grip on this meaty piece of steel.


    OK, back on topic, since this is the honing portion of the forum: I had hoped to take an SEM pic of the edge, but the SEM was down for repairs today in the lab. So, I made do with the Olympus WhizBang 2000 microscope. Image of the edge at 200x

    Next time you'll see this razor will be in the Gallery when I put a new set of scales on it!

    Very cool! I have one of those that I got off ebay a couple of weeks ago. I'm gonna take the scales off it, and get after it with the sand paper this weekend. I can't wait to shave with it!
