Thanked: 08000 to 16000
Hi,
I use the Norton combo hone at the moment (4000/8000) and am thinking of getting the Shapton 16000 hone, is this to much of a jump to 16000 from the 8000 hone? anyone else doing the same?, or any needs for pastes after this honing?
Cheers, Mark

Thanked: 1587Yes, I often do that. I find it works well, and it is nice and mathematical too: 4 -> 8 -> 16!!
Bear in mind that the jump is probably a bit further than you think. Norton and Shapton grit ratings are not quite comparable. But the fast and aggressive nature of the Shapton ceramic glass stones mean that it is not really an issue.
But in any event, yes, I have often jumped from the Norton 8k to the Shapton 16K and the results have been fine.
Whether you want pastes or whatever after the 16K is entirely a person choice. You can definitely shave off the 16K.

Thanked: 22There should be no issues with that. I go from 8k to natural hones rating around 20K+ without any problem, and there is no increased honing time for me.

Thanked: 0Thanks, I was thinking the mathmatical side of things to, I also plan to get the Shapton 4000, 8000 too, the 16000 was just the start, next wil be the DGLP ($$$)... then the other hones, I figure i can use the Norton till I get the rest.
Of subject here, what does anyone think of the Dovo Prima Klang? I'm getting one of those from Straight Razor Designs.

Thanked: 13245Sounds like a very familiar story to me, the Norton 4/8 and the Shapton 16k was exactly the combo I used until I finally made the jump to the full Shapton set....

I go from the 8k to a Shapton 16k and the results are awesome.
I'm somewhat of an experimenter and have both shaved directly off the 16k and with using chromium paste after the 16k. You really don't need to paste but as long as you don't do too many laps it does seem to make the shave a little more comfortable.
