I prefer narrow and long hones ( the lower the grade or the higher number of strokes needed for a specific hone the longer the hone )

Taking aside the width, I only use 45 deg X heel leading strokes, but I transfer the weight of the razor from heel to tip when needed (smilling or old razors with heavy curved tip), making a motion of my hand, and I believe that this motion is more natural with the 45 deg X stroke

I use the X-stroke on all of my hones, sometimes with
    a slight heel leading angle.

I am very interested that there are 22 votes for not using an X stroke, but no one is willing to explain themselves... =)

I really prefer the 3 inch hones. So much more stability in keeping a blade flat against the stone throughout the entire stroke. Also great for circles. Regular X pattern unless a smiley blade or a wedge type blade and then still an X stroke at a 45 degree angle.
