Thread: OLD hones scored :)

I just got 2 stones I've been trying to get out of my grandfathers shop. Pics are in the works...

One is a 2 sided piece that appears to be a coticule, yellow/cream color on one side and a burgandy on the other side. After flattening I noticed that what I assumed was slate may very well be another hone. The burgandy side that I thought was slate has a pearlessence to it. I think I saw the pattern in esher or coticule stones somewhere on this site or in searches... now I can't find any of the pics...

The other "brick" may very well be an arkansas stone of somesort. It was caked in old, OLD oil or WD40, shallack (sp) is more like it. I took it to the 125 DMT plate to grind off the black coating or hardened steel shavings and solid oil build up. The stone is VERY dence and heavy and after MUCH lapping I was able to get the solid layer of oil off, Not much of the stone wears off easaly. I'm sure that the color underneath is not natural yet as I still think the black goo is still present in the serface. So far it's a mottled burnt orange color. The wood box it has been in was fitted to the stone... as in the stone will not fit bact in unless placed back in how it came out...

When I get the pics I like taken I'll post them. Till than if anyone has links to some good pics of these stones and their surfaces I'd love it.

If the back side of the coticule produces a purplish slurry then it is a BBW back whether glued or naturally formed. Nice stone. I wouldn't know about the other one but Howard at the Perfect Edge says that oven cleaner works well to clean oil out of a stone.

Nice natural coticule ! I don't have a clue what the orange one is but as much use as it had it looks like it would be awfully good for something. Knives or maybe tool blades ? Maybe even razors ? You got a couple of nice hones there.

It looks glued rather than natural to me. There seems a definite join between the two. I may be wrong, but that's how i'm seeing it. Haven't a clue on the other though.
