I think when I experimented with this it took about 40-70 laps on the Swaty to take the shoulder off.

    Just tape it again

I don't hone anything without tape after honing a VIRGIN W&B FBU wedge
and after a very short honing session it had (what looked like) considerable hone wear.
It wasn't, but it wasn't virgin anymore either.

It is for exactly this reason that I dislike the idea of taped honing. I've got a good barber's hone, dammit, I want to USE it!

If 5 barber hone laps would fix it then would not 50 linen laps do about the same

Temporarily yes but not over the long haul. I think the use of linen does extend the time between touch ups but it does not replace them. Eventually a touch up on a hone, such as a barber hone, will be required.
