Livi's Honing Setup
Hi Gentlemen,
In a video on Youtube, Maestro Livi is honing a razor. In one comment below, he tells the setup he uses to make his razors "shave-ready":
1) Japanese Stone 300 grit
2) Japanese Stone 1000 grit
3) Japanese Stone 3000 grit
4) Belgian Coticule
5) Arkansas Stone
6) Green paste on loom strop (probably CrOx)
7) Yellow paste on loom strop
Here is the video:

I've seen that video and marveled at it. I cannot believe that he hones like that ordinarily. Than again, it is like watching Ryan Leech ride a bicycle, I can't believe he can do that either.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

So, if any noob had posted that vid we would all most likely jump on:
--the straight on edge grind on the 300 grit
--the lift the spine as you strop to flip the razor over
--the very high incedence angle he uses to "shave test" the razor...dry no less.
I guess it works for him though????

Yeah, his pre shave prep is a bit unorthodox as well. Still he makes some of the finest custom razors that have ever touched a whisker and I imagine his normal honing and shaving routines are not quite as exotic.

You wish!
I love this video cause it always gets the teacher type of guys fired up.
Well and as an equivalent to a lot of other techniques.

Yeah, other Livi's videos have been discussed here, specially on his stropping and honing technique.
But I found this particular video interesting to see the grit progression he uses. The number of laps on each stone is also awkward, most people here would say he'd need more laps on each stone.

You forgot the skin stropping in the listed progression!
