I shaved for years honing with a Col. Conk stone (what is that, about 1200?), with excellent results. In fact, when I first got a Norton 4000/8000 in 2003, I couldn't shave after using it. After I got the hang of the Norton, I do think my shaves are a bit smoother, but one can easily shave well and comfortably with a much coarser stone.

I've set bevels before with 2000 grit automotive sandpaper and had luck shaving right off of that. Can't go ATG on my chin or upper lip as easily as I can with a highly polished edge, but then again I don't have to for a "good" shave.

Thanked: 2591Glen,
great post.
I don't know if you remember the two razors I sent you to run on the belts..I decided to follow an advice you posted somewhere. I set bevel on Bester 500, then 1k Chosera untill arm hairs were popping easily. Then 3k chosera 8k king, just a few laps on 10k and newsprint. No CrO no stropping, and I got one great shave with practically no faceburn. I consider this a very good step forward , having in mind this is the third razor I have ever honed.
I will try to shave off 1K next time I hone.Stefan

I have an Aoto (2-3K est.) coming and plan to use that for setting bevels.

Well said, Glen. I have had a similar experience off my DMT extra-fine (1200 grit I think). I believe it has everything to do with technique.

I should mention couple important factors in this post.
At first there is differences among stones in same grit.
Example while you can cut hair off 1k shapton (not pop up) but you will never ever able to cut hair off 1k norton.(you wil need to put tremondous pressure and may be will be cutting some )
i had problem with this post until i got shapton 1k and there is a big differences with norton 1k.
it may be because of Japanese 1k (shapton )is not really our 1k.
I don't know that is the only reason or not .
I know only after norton 1k you will not be able to cut hair but you can cut it easily after shapton 1k.
why i post this to clarify if anyone else has same confusion.
