Post Some Honing Gymnastics with a TI

I just sent this one back home (I will leave the TSD Member's name out he can post if he wants) but before I did, I took some snaps, as this is a classic Whoops !!! and I thought it would make for some good discussion..

Background on the razor, it came from an Online vendor which I will leave nameless, in fact it was sent as a replacement for one that was un-satisfactory in the first place... The member never honed it, he put it away after some terse e-mails back and forth...

You have to look close at the bevel to see the damage that was done to the edge

Now I used a variation of the classic "Bread-knifing" to take that out, starting at about a 60 degree angle of attack using some Japanese style honing on a DMT 325.. I dropped to 40 degrees, then 20, then 3 layers of tape on the spine..
I kept that gentle TI smile and then moved to the Chosera 1k to reset a bevel with 1 layer of tape...

IMHO It looked as though when it was honed originally, they dinged the bevel dragging it off the the edge of a hone and gave it a slight wrinkle there..
Instead of correcting it, they just continued to hone it, and made it worse

Anyway here is the corrected edge

I thought maybe we could discuss some bevel correction techniques here

Please do, I just got done with my first few of honings and while they're sharp and have a straight edge, the first razor has quite the wavey bevel. this has got less severe on further razors, but that was mainly because they had undamaged edges whereas the first one i did has a bit ratty edge wise, could be a good thread

I've received quite a few TI's from members lately and the conditions have not been that different from what you are showing Glen. Some have been frowned, some have had different wear on the spines and different on both sides and some have had a wider bevel on the front then on the back. Depending on how much metal needs to be removed, I may start out on the 220 holding the razor by the spine and trying to keep a 45 degree angle on the edge and do circles until mostly corrected. I then use a layer of tape and continue with circles on the 220 with the razor flat on the stone. When I get to a consistent bevel that will bite on the TPT, I then go to the Chosera 1K, usually without tape and will do 40 circle sets followed by 10-15 X strokes. If I think it will take more than 2-3 sets to get the bevel where I want it, I will use a layer of tape for a couple sets and then continue without it. That 45 degree angle vs. a breadknifing really makes the bevel setting go a lot easier and definitely will remove steel with a little pressure and the circles.

    Have fun,

    Lynn

Not a bad idea Gerrit, I want to try and get a really good one in Sept at the 2nd Spokane meet we know how to work everything now and maybe we can get the angle changes etc: on there.. That is the one thing that was hard for me to show with only myself filming it.. but with a bunch of us there maybe we can do a really good one
