Most hones in the old wooden boxes from England will have plaster on the bottom or sides of the stone. If they have been used with oil, which most have, there will be a line on the side of the stone that was exposed to the elements. The bottom of the hone was settled into the box and will remain near natural in color. The exposed top will always be darker because of the oil kerosene mixture used years ago.

Any idea how old this could be? I know the stone is millions of years old, but the wooden box with the hone. When was it sold originally?

Oh, I forgot to tell you guys another thing about the slurry. I has the prettiest pink slurry I've ever seen.

I got one with the wooden box too, tho mines a different size, its still in transit tho so ill let you know more when i get it.

Shipping to Glasgow was cheap and fast. I got a coticule and a llyn melynllyn from him a few weeks ago. I lapped the llyn to at least 1k but AJ contacted me to advise it performs best in his experience when lapped to around the 180 mark.

I've got all three also, they're worth the wait!! All three will improve off of an 8k with the LM and the black hone really improving the edge.

I have had good luck using my small Thurnigian to slurry the LM. I slowly dilute to a slight slurry and then add the thick glycerin instead of finishing on water. (Glycerin Walmart $3.00) It gives the same results as finishing on oil without the oil clean up. If the glycerin is too thick, add tiny drops of water to get the mixture that suits you. Same as oil, super easy cleanup. The edge rivals the edge I get with my Escher.
