Really!?
Hey all check this out... claims to have scales of Mammoth Ivory 20,000 - 30,000 years old. Is it real?

It's more readily available these days than elephant ivory. However, giving ivory such an uninspired shape is a huge waste. In this case, "more" isn't equal to "better". Give Jason, Gary, Peter or Chris 1/4 of what the seller wasted on those scales and you'll get a truly beautiful composite.

For some reason I thought he just re-scaled a DOVO. This is an even worse waste. Talk about big corporations wasting resources on spewing out generic c*ap :

I agree it's a waste. shouldn't the ivory be in a museum or something? I'm a wood man mayself, so maybe that's why i can't really see the point.

There's plenty of it to go around for small craftsmen, but it should have a unique shape. This one's too bland, neutral and uninspiring.

Don't be so critical guys. The idea with the composite is to give better durability to the ivory which can be very fragil. That selling price retai new of those razors is too high for what you get but the selling price at auction is about right. The workmanship on Dovo's is usually very high so unless you have actually handled one I wouldn't be too critical.

I have handled a Dovo, and I agree with you, bigspendur, that they are well made. I was merely agreeing with the previous statement that the scales are uninspired in comparision to the work that I have seen on this site (although I am less than a novice, I can appreciate the creativity and thought that went into the pieces)

I think you will find that when it comes to Ivory be it Elephant or mamouth the products are very simple and do not have that much design to it. Even the vintage stuff on Eboy is plain vanilla. Ivory carving is a real art and few master it. If you wanted an Ivory scale with true custom carving you couldn't touch it for less than a grand for simple stuff. Look at the maestro's razors in Ivory-plain. I have some vintage stuff in Ivory-plain. I have an Ivory handled badger brush from matt-plain. That's just the way it is with Ivory. The beauty is in the substance itself.
