Looks like a typo. A lot of german adjectives end in -ig, so maybe that had something to do with it?

Just a typo made by german typesetter setting up something in a language he didnt speak.

There is no german word for thinning that looks remotely like that or ending that way, besides its a verb used like an adjective in this example, ie a participle.

Yeah I know, I was just saying that at first glance the ending looks natural, not that it could be a real word, so I can see how the typo might have gotten made.

It reminds me of something you use to back butter when you tile.
