    Default strange frisor machine...

Can anybody explain what this is all about... as it seems easier to me to just sterilize the blade in the flame of a match, candle or whatever...:

I can't read german, but it's a flame sterilizer - you can see the wick and the adjuster. Probably used alcohol.

Sure it's easier to use a candle if you're just doing one razor, but if you own a shop with several barbers, then a dedicated machine with a controlled flame is handy. You can see how big the reservoir is - this thing was designed to be on all day.

Wouldn't the flame de-temper the steel? I guess this was the only option before UV and sterilizing liquids.

Alcohol has lower flame temperature than other combustible liquids. Adding water to the alcohol lower the temperature of the flame further.

    Very cool!!!

Alcohol or oil would leave less carbon on the blade than a candle or match. I wouldn't worry about ruining the temper to sterilize you would only have to pass the razor through the flame. I can't imagine any barber leaving a razor standing in a lit flame sitting there for any length of time. probably just long enough to steralize and warm the blade.

Back in the really old days when surgery was in its infancy they had devices like that to sterilize scalpels before doing surgery. It was in use during the Civil war. After all you wouldn't want to chop off someones legs or arms with dirty knives now would you?
