Thread: Stolen Custom Razor

FYI....
I was contacted April 6 by a client who had a razor stolen (and other possessions and a police report was filed).
Feeling the razor would never be seen again he asked to be put on the list for another razor.
Fast forward to this week... I received a FB message from a lady who just so happened to have bought a box of "stuff" at a garage sale
that happened to have a Brian Brown Custom Razor (complete with original box).
Thinking the unimaginable just happened, I confirmed the razor was in fact the stolen razor.
I assumed after making her aware of the situation all would be well and she would reunite the razor to the owner.
As it turns out, she ceased contact with me after receiving the info. I, in turn, gave the info I had to my client, who turned it over to the police.
They contacted her and she claims she knows nothing about this razor.

If it should pop up on eBay US or Canada for sale OR locally for sale in Victoria, BC, be aware it is stolen and a police report has been file with the info.

I don't think she expected anything. I think she truly did buy it in a box of "stuff"
I thinking she was excited with the find, did some research to find out about it which lead her to contacting me.
I tend to think that the majority of people will do the right thing when given the chance.
It was disappointing to see that she decided not to.

I assumed she made up the part about buying at a garage sale and was in fact associated with the theft, and trying to get a price on it. But if she did really buy at a garage sale, the police should pay them a visit too!

Maybe so.... I believe she started out being honest.
If she is in with the person that stole the items.. there is nothing to gain from her contacting me.
Why go to the trouble of writing a huge FB message detailing everything step of how she got the razor.
It wasn't just a quick "hi, I got one of your razors..." FB message. It was literally a hundred lines or so..
I think the memory loss came when she found out here $4 investment was in fact stolen..

Perhaps letting her know, if the original owner is willing, that a reward is offered and no questions will be asked ?

I kind of thought the same thing. I offered to send her a few goodies just for doing what was right (ie: custom bottle opener, t-shirt..)

I didn't even tell her the price. She already knew it from looking on my site.

Interesting tale, that; I hope it all comes to a good resolution for the victim.

MileMarker60, I really get your surprise about being contacted that way. Many years ago, I was the victim of a theft; I lost some unusual, high-end srereo equipment in the heist. I couldn't locate my receipts for the insurance claim, so I went to the shop where I'd bought the gear to get a statement. I'd barely stepped into the store when the owner (who didn't know that I'd been robbed) said, "I've been trying to figure out how to contact you! A pawn shop in town called the other day asking me for prices on stuff just like yours. Isn't that weird?"

Figuring that the pawn shop must have my gear, I went there to see what I might find. There on display on the store's wall was most of my system! The owner saw me checking the stuff out and said, "I see that you're interested in high end stereo, I can give you a good price." I somehow managed to stay cool, and even haggled with the guy until we'd settled on a price. Then I asked if he had anything else of similar quality. "As a matter of fact, I do", he said, "I just haven't had a chance to put it on display." He took me into the back of the shop, and pulled a tarp off what turned out to be the rest of my set up. More haggling ensued, and I told him that I needed him to hold the merchandise for me while I made a run to the bank.

I went to a nearby pay phone and called the detective handling my case. When I explained the situation, he said, "Sit tight, we'll be there with a warrant soon; we've been trying to bust that shop, and we've got them this time!" When I walked back into the shop with the cops, the owner immediately claimed that I'd set him up! He gave up the names of the two thieves, who were arrested. The fence and one thief went to prison; the other thief beat the theft charge due to lack of evidence, but did some time for trafficking in stolen goods. And I eventually got my equipment back.
