Default Picked up this Relic for fun Bengall Cast Steel

Vintage Bengall Cast Sheffield Straight Razor with Old Optician Glasses Box | eBay

Seller originally listed this within the hour for $25 opening Auction bid or $35 Buy it Now with $6 Shipping. I messaged him and worked out $30 Shipped. Now to receive it and know the rust off of it. Nice common but fairly Historic blade.

If found in the wild I would have offered less but on eBay you don't have as much leeway to dicker. I feel $30 shipped is a fair deal.

Not bad at all, no so sure if the scales can be saved but nevertheless a nice early Bengall, i would think that this razor is close to being bicentennial.

I am actually thinking 1880's myself...late Cast Steel piece..not as early as most would think. Like I said in original post...a common razor but one that I will likely sand the rust off as well as sand and oil the horn scales...hone and use until I get bored with it and pass it along at a reasonable price thanks to my entry point.

One point of interest is the #s scratched into the scales. There was a whole thread with theories about what the significance of these markings are. Some thought it was a code used by a honer, a barber ....... IIRC Tom (Sharpton) has a number of them. I don't think anyone ever figured out what they mean for sure. Another straight razor mystery.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

My guess would be 1840 give or take a few, that stamp can be found on very early Bengall's.
