Default sometimes things go under the radar, but this time it seems like Ebay kept it under

I won the auction on this Charnley Forest hone last weekend, I had my max bid quite high but it stayed put at £8,50, crazy cheap and I even feel kind of bad for the seller...

The seller didn't specify the shipping cost in the bidding, but did state in the Ad that he was willing to ship it abroad, this happens more often and usually this isn't a problem I don't mind the unknown part there as you can easily guess what it would probably cost.

Now this is the strange part in it all, because he didn't spicify the shipping cost Ebay didn't alllow me to even place a bid on the item because of my location!! in fact when I looked up the ad again using the exact title in the Ebay search it didn't show up, neither did it while searching for "sharpening stone" or something of that sort.

After I contacted the seller, he confirmed he had no problem shipping it but he couldn't change the settings in order to enable me to make a bid on it, is this Ebay messing things up? or what's going on here?

I had a similar problem buying from France, item was specified for shipping in France. I contacted the seller about him shipping to the US. He said sure, enabled out of country shipping and I was able to bid.
The easy road is rarely rewarding.

I also lost an item on eBay for the same reason, I emailing the seller about a shipping cost and waited to the last second before I bid, Ebay refused the bid because of the shipping, I contacted the seller and he was pissed and said he would deal with eBay but there was nothing he could do for me (understandably)

Well luckily I tried to place a bid early on so I had time to contact him, he couldn't enable it for me so I actually entered a phony shipping adress on ebay so I could place a bit and deleted that adres right after so I did win the auction but still, I was suprized that Ebay had put up these bariers..

You should always contact the seller beforehand so they can add you to their "Buyer Requirements Exemption List" which will enable you to bid, even if they haven't marked it for shipping to your country. You would then just need to work out an agreed price or estimated price range for shipping.

That's good to know FiveOhNine, in this case I had the idea that the seller wasn't all that experienced with the use of Ebay, I kind of had to guide him on how the change the invoice to include the shipping costs.

I guess the lesson to learn here is that when you don't have that much experience with ebay it's smart to use a minimum price just in case you missed some setting and only three people get to see your ad

yes that was the one, you could see it because you live in the UK, he had some nice stones.to bad you didn't win, you missed out on some great deals

that was a 9" coticule and I've never seen a thuringien go that cheap (honestly, it was small, 1,5 X 5 inch, but still), I was thinking of going for one of his thuringien hones as well but I missed the ending of that auction.
