I started buying W&B's last year because, for whatever reason, these old razors really resonated with me. Guess this was slightly before the prices started going up. But then, at that time, the Ducks were going for very high prices.
I think I was lucky and found my flavor. I've never bought one with the idea of ever making a cent from it, without ever thinking what it, "could be worth in XX amount of years". If the price of W&B's was to drop significantly, the only thing that would affect me would that I'd be able to buy more, and hopefully my coveted spike point 9/8 Celebrated Hollow Ground, For Barbers Use. I have one, and the only other I've seen has been Max's I believe. Other than that, just really haven't seen any of them....

In 25 years or so Gillette will be selling their laser cartridge razor and straights will be sold off for scrap steel to China. Some dude will see two ducks in the hull of some Aircraft carrier and wonder what that's all about.

To tell the truth, I despair of every owning a nice Fili. I've been into straights for less than a year, and have been astounded by the pricing!
Maybe I'll be desperate and rich enough some day... then again, I could get lucky! When you are dead, you don't know that you are dead. It's difficult only for the others.
It's the same when you are stupid.

Thanked: 40Reading through this thread, I would point out two things: (1) This auction sold on a Sunday evening (this will bring highest prices) and (2) it is one of those pre-1950s Doble Temples with Gold Wash still intact. From watching Fili 14 auctions, the older Doble Temple with intact gold wash seem to fetch high prices.
I own one of those older Doble Temple 14s, and it is a great shaver. I bought mine with no gold wash, with non-original scales, and from an Argentinian seller. I paid less than $100. Deals can be had on Filis, you just have to change some of your parameters. I get these sense that anyone trying to get a minty Doble 14 from a U.S. / U.K. seller with gold wash will face multipler bidders and high prices.

If that razor was pristine with original scales, I'd drop $400 on it with astonishing speed. Good gold wash, and as fine a shaver as any razor, truly.
However. In my opinion what we see is a $150 blade with a lot of potential that will require hours of delicate work to get it up to snuff, not to mention the price of a pristine set of period scales. There are some good Filis out there for reasonable (market) prices. This one went way too high.
