Rob, there is no secret formula. You just have to follow the auctions for a while so you get a feel for the hot property, and be willing to bid high for something you really want. Snipers are a fact of life...the only way you preempt them is to make something seem not worth it. Or be a sniper yourself! Most especially, don't be afraid to walk away.

Unfortunately if your not winning its because your not bidding high enough.
if your getting outbid by very small amounts you could try snipeing.
its easy to use you just entry the max your willing to pay and it will bid for you at the last second. It stops idiots paying more than they would have. but its still true that if your not willing to pay more than someone else you won't win.

    • If something has > 2 bidders, I don't even try.
    • If something comes even close to resembling a fair price I don't bid unless I would buy it anyway for that price.
    • I don't snipe.
    • I don't particularly want to obtain a dubl duck or filarmonica or any other famous brand of razor in very good condition.
    • I don't even care about the scales. They could be broken for all I care. I only care about the steel and whether it is salvageable.

    As for bidding:
    • I regularly browse for straights.
    • If I see something interesting I wait until the final hours.
    • If it is still not the subject of a bidding war and still around its initial price, I place a max bid and walk away.

    If I got it, I pay a very good price. If I don't, then I don't care.

There is really no secret for winning on Ebay. As a rule, the highest bidder will always win. Snipping will prevent most bidding wars and can give you a slight advantage, but still, the one willing to pay the most will win.

The best advice is to carefully decide on the most you are willing to pay for a certain item and stick with that amount. If someone is willing to pay more than you, they will win. Learn to accept it. There are some very deep pockets playing the ebay game.

The worst thing you can do is constantly change your mind about how much to bid on an item. This is what causes bidding wars, is usually emotion based, irrational, and will often lead you to pay much more than what you originally thought (or know) the item is worth. You will be the perfect victim for shill bidders and the like.

At the end you may end up with the item, but you will often have spent too much. You'll get buyers remorse as well. Next week you will see the exact same item go for $100 less than what you paid.
