    Default Escher?

There is a seller, primarily of hones, on Ebay, whom I believe has never put a razor to a hone. He has on more than one occasion been selling a hone where he says at the end of a description: Escher?
At the prices these things are going for these days you might as well be selling a sparkling piece of faceted glass mounted in a ring and end the description saying: Diamond? In fairness to him he allows returns but I don't understand why Ebay allows this practice.

Unfortunately ignorant or predatory ebay sellers of hones and razors have picked up on key words and phrases that bump up prices.

Two of the most frequent are "Escher" and "Shave Ready."

    +1...

I can think of TWO more...: the acronym "NOS", and "FULLY RESTORED".

What confuses this specific issue is that the guy will actually have genuine labeled Eschers....in fact he has a beauty right now for $1000.

I haven't looked at his stuff, but for some stone mavens a stone may really resemble an bona fide Escher. IOW, if the person is really experienced with Eschers, and comes upon a stone that has lost the label, they can many times ID the stone based on color, especially dimensions, and texture. For example, Escher made many stones in standard (for Escher) sizes. Hohenzollern also made what were for them standard sizes, and they are not the same as Escher's standard sizes.

So someone who is really experienced with many labeled examples can assume that an unlabeled stone is the real Mc'Coy. I once sold an Escher with a back label, but no end label, as a yellow/green. I know it was a yellow/green because I've had a half dozen come and go. I can ID the other colors for the same reason. Of course this doesn't mean that a seller wanting to have his auction noticed in search results won't list it with "Escher?", when he knows it is not. They don't say Caveat Emptor for nothin'. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
