"Lower 48 states"
Hey everyone,
This one is just me being a smart ass. I know that our brothers in shaving in the UK and AU have it worst, but...
"LOWER 48 states only" this phrase kills me. If you look on any map, you'll see that Hawaii, IS one of the lower 48. In fact, we are lower that most of the states, yet shipping to here is stupid expensive. And to be honest, I can't figure out why. I've shipped thing to the mainland, and shipped things back this way...there is no difference in cost, but like another thread was griping about, "handling" fees are what get me (I mean come on, Hawaii has less letters than Montana )

Thanked: 1I haven't heard "Lower 48" in a long time. The phrase, at least around here, is now "CONTIGUOUS 48" I suppose implying those on the continent that are joined to each other by shared borders. As for shipping, I have no idea how any of it is figured out. Since your ranting, I won't offer any advice Let me just paraphrase a movie line "Stupid is as Post Office does"

How true
I'm sometimes tempted to bid on auctions with "lower..." on it and then send a picture of a map, but naturally I don't.
Like the that quote I heard a long time ago "they are a people of common sense, not logic."

These people are probably under the assumption that the earth is flat and ends beyond the mainland. These people just don't want you package to fall over the edge.
I just received my J.Barber today, shipped from the states. It cost only 5.25$ with USPS shipping. So it's not like it is more expensive to ship international.
The whole 'mainland only' thing is probably stupidity on the part of the seller.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

Most items require additional shipping to Hawaii because everything has to go by plane or boat.... same as Alaska. UPS requires blue label (2nd day air) to both with no ground options.....
Depends on the carrier. Won't be long before the USPS requires priority mail minimum to both of them- the next rate change in July eliminates international surface mail and a few other classes.

Still...shipping is not nessecarily more expensive just because it's on mainland. Take dutch shipping. It's cheaper for me to send a piece of soap to the states than to ship it to the other side of the country (less than 100 miles).
People who claim stuff like that are just ignorant most of the time. I just don't bother with them.

I'd have to agree with LX, Shipping in not more expensive. I know this for a fact. I've shipped to and from the "lower 48" and there is no difference in price. You don't need to put special wrappers on them. And we don't strap them on Dolphins (hmmm...)
I can't see it being more expensive than shipping to the Uk, and even that's reasonable...
The only thing that IS more expensive is UPS. They have ground service to Hawaii (still trying to figure that one out), which is more expensive than next day air to Hawaii and takes 30 days.
Factoid: Hawaii has three interstate highways

Ground service for international is container ship so it must be the same for Hawaii. At work we hate to ship international packages by surface because of the inevitible way they are treated.
Maybe it's a weight threshold- international air jumps in cost substantially at 5 lbs for example....
I see USPS does have parcel post to Hawaii which would be surface mail, but 1 lb to Hawaii via UPS is $25 surface and $28 2nd day. Way more than the $9 ground to california..... The last place I worked in shipping where we shipped to the detached states regularly we used UPS exclusively and everything had to go 2nd day per UPS. Times and rates change.
I've been ignorant of many things before, and I'm sure to be ignorant of many things in the future.
