Thanks for the post. Those are indeed beautiful and do seem to be reasonably priced. Unfortunately, the humidity is very high in my area and I am forced to store my razors in the treated cotton sleeves - ugly but better than rust.

I had a knife sheath that was made from chrome tanned leather and it kept rusting and I couldn't figure it out. I later found out that the salts from chrome tanned leather will cause steel to rust so a razor case made from chrome tanned leather wouldn't be a good idea. Chromexcel leather I am not sure if that is a different type of process or not so I think I would ask the seller a few questions about the leather first.

Chromexcel is a "double tanned" cowhide that is heavily treated with waxes and oils. It is chrome tanned first but then is vegetable (bark) tanned before being "stuffed". As such it would be much less likely to corrode steel however, I'd be a little worried about the oils - grease, really - affecting certain scale materials. Modern resin scales would probably be affected little if any, I suppose.
The sheaths are certainly attractive and should last a very long time without maintenance though.

Does the same apply to strops: never use chrome-tanned leather for a strop?

That's not a concern with strops. Two of the most popular leathers for strops are latigo which is chrome tanned first, then vegetable tanned a second time and english bridle which is veggie tanned only. Each works well for strops, neither damages the steel chemically, and usage is purely a matter of personal preference for draw, appearance, and "feel".

@Tack: so why not use chorme-tanned razor cases while you can use chrome-tanned strops?

JSmith's eperience suggests that long term storage in chrome tanned leather would damage steel so I wouldn't take the chance unless someone who knows leather better than I do said it was OK. Stropping involves such fleeting contact that it couldn't be a problem. (Besides, we're going to "wash" the edge soon after anyway. )
