Not HORRIBLE shape but needs work!
Looks like it's going to have to be taken down to a moustache razor but the scales alone hold most of the value.
I've looked through completed auctions and just scales with broken blades don't have that much value. This one has a small chip from what I can see, I don't think that makes it a mustache razor. After cleaning and honing my guess is it will be a 9/16. I'm not going to win it so it's all speculation. I really want a reaper, but I don't want to pay what I can spend on a custom razor for one.
I don't know what Rose Colored Glasses you guys look at Ebay through, but that poor thing has at LEAST 3 chips, one of them at least an 1/8 deep, and very possibly a crack. use your zoom functions and look closer. If your on a cell phone, STOP looking at Ebay! :gaah:
I am using my cell phone, but I have never had intentions of buying this razor. I do use my computer when I know I want to win. Speculation is speculation. There is no ruler in any of the pics to validate any of our opinions. One of my luckiest buys on ebay was a wade and butcher. 4 blurry and dark pictures, no description. It looked like a normal 5/8 razor. It was a 9/8 FBU. Maybe the winner will be a member and can verify all of our opinions.
If you actually print out the pic, you can see it's ugly but IMO it is salvageable.
Just too much $ for me.
Sold for $362.57...
I know you fellas are nutz for the Ducks, but that thing is toast. Everytime I see one, it looks about like that. Crumbling cell, sometimes broken, blade gassed into oblivion. Still, they go for big bucks? Are the inlays really worth that? Certainly they can be salvaged and put upon newly made scales, but where do you get a blade? All of them have been gassed. Even if you did find a nice blade, would it not cease to be an original Reaper? Duckmania! :D
I guess I am a glass 1/2 full kind of guy.
YES it would NEED a LOT of work but for the right price I would have bought it in a heartbeat.

I think the prices they go for with the shape they are in are a bit much....but if someone NEEDS it, they will pay whatever!
Just say'n
I went to the Wanted To Buy and placed an ad that I wanted on buy one.
Entropy46 one here responded with this one.
He purchased it NOS and it had never been honed.
He honed it and only shaved with it once before selling it to me.
I've only shaved with it once.
So, it's 80ish years old and only two shaves.
I think there are too many folks out there with too much money than they know what to do with.
Betcha 10 to 1 that thing has cell rot going on.
One can only hazard a guess Phrank...
Of course it need the edge fixed.
Not that big a deal (hopefully no cracks)
Then it all depends on the rust/patina as some call it. :w
Hand sanding because I hear these blades are THIN.. again hope it is okay.
Definitely NEED to rescale (EBONY would look good I think)
If all went well then you would have something you could be proud of. :tu
If all didn't...then it would at worse be a piece of trash at best a display piece.
This is all speculation anyway because who knows unless you have it in your hand.
Might not be worth the effort to even give it a try...
Thanks, I'm just reading in SRP about how to potentially hone a slight frown from a blade, and the frown on my face as well...
I'll leave magic razor repairs to the pro's like you...I just read bread knifing is a last resort type of thing...the more I read about honing and restoration, the more it's easy until you actually do it...who said that???;)
I don't know about pro.
I think I get lucky..... :tu
Like I said some time ago Mr L was telling me that one thing you never want to do ever is take the likeness of the Grim Reaper and put it on anything cause the real dude doesn't like it at all and you don't want to get him mad at you. Luckily for many shavers out there the reaper is working overtime these days keeping up but if death ever takes a holiday you all better hide those razors pronto.
Of course if you want Mr L can keep the Reaper away from you guaranteed. He has a special this month.
Not that long ago, I spotted a Lifetime blade stuffed into some cheapy replacement scales. Hone wear, yes. Rot? not a bit! One of those "if you want this one, you gotta buy these 4 other blades" I had to let it go. I'm not as crazy as some of these guys, and without the skelly, whats the point? :hmmm:
Well Chevhead was essentially correct - the blade itself would have turned out nicely if not for a hairline crack that turned up towards the heel of the razor under all the rust and gunk.
Thanks to 10Pups who put me in contact with Voidmonster who had a Lifetime DD Blade only and was kind enough to send it my way - thanks Zak!:tu
The scales themselves turned out very nicely, Val said they look great and really "pop" when you see them, and thus this DD Grim Reaper has been brought back to life.
Now - bringing this blade back to life was a lot of fun, now if I could only transform it into a couple of nice 9/8 W&B spike points....;)
Val at the Gentleman's Den did the restore, great job as always, and here are some pics of the razor all cleaned up:

so are you saying that you bought the reaper from the start of this thread?
Are you concerned about cel rot starting?
That's the one - figured I'd take a risk, and according to Val he was quite surprised in what good shape the scales were in - he said they polished right up and looked solid - so that's about all I have to go on and I trust his opinion....but cell rot...one of those things you can't predict...all I can do is make sure I store it properly.
I recall reading different ideas on cel rot prevention from soaking the scales in various products to varnishing/coating the insides etc, I dont know if I would be game to take it on, but i am pretty slack where maintenance is concerned :)
It looks good though, have you given it a spin?

I see it even made your Avatar!
Excellent restore. I knew the original blade was junk, I'm glad you were able to find a replacement.
I have not handled a LOT of Reapers, but the few I have, and a few others I came across that had scales that I believe to be from the same manufacturer, had less "cell rot" problems than they had cracking problems. They seem to get brittle more often than gassy. ( same cant be said for me) Just don't squeeze it in the center and you should be worry free for a long while (with any luck!)
That turned out really sweat!
Congrats!
I got lucky and a member told me about a Reaper leather pouch on the bay. So, now I have the pouch too!
