My concern is that this is a bogus attempt to market a mundane razor as a Wade and Butcher, via non traditional markings. Not sure I have enough experience to ferret out a scammer.

Seller wants over $100.00 for it, and no way am I paying that without knowing more about it.

Thanked: 4206Pretty hard to make bogus stampings look that good, IMO.
While I could be wrong, I think its probably legit. Genchi gunbutso, or " go see"
Would offer him 3/4 of his asking and see what happens.
Good luck, and happy shaves."Depression is just anger,, without the enthusiasm."

orville, from the blade design it looks to me to be very early in w&b company history, maybe 1820s-30s and early company prob didnt have all the common stamps yet so simple "Wade & Butcher" stamped in a common area of the blade for slogans during this period doesnt seem amiss at all, and "sheffield" on the tang instead of makers mark isnt uncommon, lots of examples from other makers like this. from photos this looks 100% period including the patina. i make straight razors and couldnt put in the time to make one like this and force the patina and wear pattern on blade and scales to come out like this and sell for only $120, no way is that worth anyones time to hoax this. and why choose to do an uncommon stamping which would be rare and more valuable in our eyes for such a low amount.
how many blades have we ever seen that were forgeries? i cant think of any at all personally. how many blades have we seen turn up with uncommon markings or elusive grinds only to years later see another example that confirms the firm used it? ive seen many examples, still see examples periodically. this uncommon marked blade will probably end up being just that- an early marking used by the firm til their more common markings were settled on.
id go after this one with confidence. i wont however drive or walk up there to get it so i hope one of you more northern folks is close enough to jumps on itSilverloaf
