Anyone ever see a Wade and Butcher like this?
Can't say that I have. I'm sure someone knows, but it might be your thread title.
nope but i want it. whats kijiji?
Kijiji is a classifieds site for us Canucks. Say I'm selling a razor someone contacts me and then we meet up locally and do the transaction through cash. No debit, cc or mailing the item.
oh im sure not, i hadnt realized that it was likee that til i sent the email and a little banner came up saying to remember to pay cash and meet in person. oh well. it sounds like a cool community driven classified platform. hopefully someone snatches it up soon and shows it here ;)
Might be Orville gets it ? It's a cool looking piece and I would get it if you didn't and I had time to drive 4000 miles :<0)
go get it orville!
Go get er man. Best to hold it In your hand before you decide anyway.
Want to see a bigger picture if you get it.
Or better yet, come over and we'll hone er up and I can see for myself.
;)
Orville should have this! Don't take it on him guys.
Anthony, this is one of those blades that will be the focal point of your collection. GO GET IT!!
NOOOooooooo! Don't do it! :roflmao
My concern is that this is a bogus attempt to market a mundane razor as a Wade and Butcher, via non traditional markings. Not sure I have enough experience to ferret out a scammer.
Seller wants over $100.00 for it, and no way am I paying that without knowing more about it.
Pretty hard to make bogus stampings look that good, IMO.
While I could be wrong, I think its probably legit. Genchi gunbutso, or " go see"
Would offer him 3/4 of his asking and see what happens.
Good luck, and happy shaves.
You win....congratulations on the find...go get it...that is a gem! :D
I saw this one as well. I thought the price was too steep for it.
orville, from the blade design it looks to me to be very early in w&b company history, maybe 1820s-30s and early company prob didnt have all the common stamps yet so simple "Wade & Butcher" stamped in a common area of the blade for slogans during this period doesnt seem amiss at all, and "sheffield" on the tang instead of makers mark isnt uncommon, lots of examples from other makers like this. from photos this looks 100% period including the patina. i make straight razors and couldnt put in the time to make one like this and force the patina and wear pattern on blade and scales to come out like this and sell for only $120, no way is that worth anyones time to hoax this. and why choose to do an uncommon stamping which would be rare and more valuable in our eyes for such a low amount.
how many blades have we ever seen that were forgeries? i cant think of any at all personally. how many blades have we seen turn up with uncommon markings or elusive grinds only to years later see another example that confirms the firm used it? ive seen many examples, still see examples periodically. this uncommon marked blade will probably end up being just that- an early marking used by the firm til their more common markings were settled on.
id go after this one with confidence. i wont however drive or walk up there to get it so i hope one of you more northern folks is close enough to jumps on it :D
I meant bogus in the sense that he might take a period razor from a non-descript manufacturer and "improve it" with the stampings. but you guys have me convinced. Waiting to hear from the seller, but I think I will try and get it.
Out of respect for finders keepers, I hope you enjoy today's weather driving out to get it, hint hint. ;)
Oh man, had a chance to hop on the laptop here. Found the add, the things in its original scales too!!!!! MY GAWD!!
if you aint already done it, just go get the damned thing already. If you don't like it, sell it to one of us!
I'm on it. Just got the initial reply from the seller, and left voice mail. Hoping to get it tomorrow, at the latest. Will advise . . .
Meeting the seller tomorrow (Sunday). Apparently he has other "barbering" stuff, too. I wonder what else I may find.
Nice, take some cashola!!
Where is Silverloaf ??? and why does he have a sign on his shop door " GONE fishing" :<0)
Go Orville GO !
hahaha, well actually the seller contacted me first and was set to settle a deal but i held off to see if orville was going for it! orville- ask the seller if silverloaf backed off, he will verify that i did. :D wasnt mine to go after, i should have waited longer before contacting him in the first place. after reading Harrywallys comment ("Orville should have this! Don't take it on him guys. Anthony, this is one of those blades that will be the focal point of your collection. GO GET IT!!") i admit i felt a little ashamed for being such an eager beaver haha! this will be an awesome piece, enjoy it, no regrets!
Well Silver at least you man up when it counts. Don't blame ya for checking it out. Everybody knows AND Orville just learned, If you see something you might want, don't point at it until you decide. It's like throwing a pork chop in a kennel full of puppies and saying "sit boys" :<0)
Well, I have to be honest, I did choose the picture I posted with an eye towards sheltering the source. I guess I should have avoided mentioning ANYTHING about where I sourced it. Lesson learned . . . and no more chumming of the waves. :rofl2:
I will be sure to post the results of tomorrow's excursion, regardless of outcome. Might even use Silver's backing off as a negotiating ploy . . . appreciate the generosity in allowing me first crack.
orville- as a sidenote- see if you can pics of the rest of the razor, im particularly interested in whether all four of those daisy collars are there. that would just be such a nice bonus! an original restore on that puppy would be such a sweet thing imo
If I buy it (hee hee hee . . . "if". RIIIIGGGHHHTT), there will be pics aplenty, and I will be looking into someone who can do a restoration justice. I have an idea of who I want to do it, but we'll see.
I can confirm that silverloaf was indeed gentlemanly in his behaviour, allowing yours truly first crack at this W&B razor. Thank you sir. I can also say that he had this weird "hand-clipper" gizmo for hair. Not my thing, but it was like a manually operated version of the electric clippers that Barber's use today. And he had a Stainless Ever-Ready Slant that I picked up for display purposes, because it was in good shape.
You will also be happy to know that he has an Uncle up in cottage country who apparently has a display case full of Straights. I have his contact info., and vice versa, so who knows . . . a small treasure trove may soon be in the offing. I will not hog the spoils though . . . fair treatment runs BOTH ways, after all. If I hear anything I will post it here for ALL to see.
That is really what I love about this site. Occasional bad apple (no place is immune) aside, mostly populated by honest, and generous people. I make a habit of sending messages to people when I see something I know they might be interested in, and have been graciously been allowed first crack at items I have expressed interest in.
I know its mostly just an "internet" community, but still a community non the less.
Thank you all, for helping me believe there is still hope for humanity. :chapeau
Congrats, and pics please..
I got called into work, so pics will have to wait until tonight. posting from work, while I wait for a truck to show up.
Also, I was wondering how long it would take for a "useless without pics" post Thanks, Mike.
