Thanked: 315Rough Old Hone, Says It's Escher, ???
The listing says it is supposed to be a Escher, but knowing nothing about German hones I don't know what it is. I've never seen one this rough, so I thought they were probably pretty hard. stones.
I know someone once posted that without papers/label, they are usually a Thuringian at best. I messaged them asking for better pics and they posted them today. Anyone able to identify it?

Thanked: 433If it is an Escher, it's in really bad shape. It doesn't look like one to me. Any Escher I've seen isn't rounded off looking like that one and the grain looks off to me. It might be bad photography and really dirty, it's really hard to say
P.S Eschers are really soft stones like a Coticule. It takes little work to make a slurryLast edited by rodb; 10-02-2015 at 06:12 PM.

Yes, "the grain looks off to me" as well.
That ain't an Escher.
That is a rock someone decided would sell better if named an Escher because they saw how much other rocks named Escher were being sold for but is distancing himself from the claim by saying he "was told it was an Escher."
Oh, and it also ain't a Thuringian. I don't think it is even any kind of slate.

Thanked: 315Thanks
I was doubtful, but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. It's grain looks pretty coarse, but I've never seen an Escher close up. It has been listed for some time, so I guess it was pretty obvious to more experienced hone collectors/users.
RodB, I didn't know Eschers were soft stones. I guess the ones I've seen for sale online have been lightly used or lapped. As much as they bring at auction, I'm sure it is worth the effort to make them look nice.
