Thread: reputable eBay sellers

Greetings everyone,

I'm new to the forum, but spent many hours the past week trying to due my research on razors, strops, stones etc. It seems the general consensus is to buy a shave ready razor and a budget minded strop, and get started. Like many, I'd like to dip my toe in the water, and do so without spending much money. I'm mindful that my first razor might not be a beauty, or the most highly regarded razor, and I'm OK with that. I can always invest in a higher quality razor down the road. I like the idea of purchasing a vintage razor that has been restored, than in buying a new razor and spending over $100.00.

I've found several eBay sellers with very high feedback scores, and recently found out about whipped dog as well. One seller I found is jjroweguns (currently has a nice looking Genco for sale). His description of blade restoration seems thorough.

Are there others that you may know of? I've used the advanced search button on SRP and found a few recommended sellers, but most of them have none for sale. SRP has several razors in the classified section, but all are out of my budget.

So, might anyone have recommended eBay sellers? whipped dog is definitely an option for me, but I hesitate without knowing what the razor will be.

Welcome to SRP. IME it is important for me to see the razor before I buy it. Sometimes saving money can be synonymous with wasting it. Ebay, SRP, and the rest of the world say 'caveat emptor' ....... let the buyer beware. So make sure you have good images of whatever it is, and preferably with a seller who accepts returns. If you have any doubts on specifics ask questions before you bid or buy. Usually some good razors, many times at bargain prices , in the SRP classifieds.

My recommendation to newer razor users is to stay away from Ebay & look at the classified's here...it's much safer as the folks here aren't just trying to make a quick buck off you.

Not to mention you will want the razor to be honed correctly, and most ebay sellers don't, it's in your best interest and to your wallet to buy from a reputable source by people who use straight razors like our classifieds here, your journey to learning this trade will be a much better experience with the right tools instead of a crap shoot. I was in your position not that long ago, and luckily took the advice given here and bought a Dovo shave ready off the exchange. The seller even offered to hone it for me for free down the road! That razor combined with a homemade strop and cheap brush and soap set got me started for around $75.
I know it is tempting to go all out, but start cheaper to make sure you enjoy this hobby. Down the road there are lots of goodies to blow your wallet on when you find how how amazing straight razor shaving is

+1 some very nice and reasonably priced shave ready razors in th classifieds at the moment

exactly the kind of deal I'm looking for. Under $100 bucks for a nice razor, strop combo- shave ready. Brush and soap set is a bonus. Hopefully something like this pops up soon. Perhaps that seller has another combo he'd like to sell me...?

That leaves you up to around $65 for the razor and you should be able to get a good vintage razor in great condition for that.

I purchased my first straight from Larry at Whipped Dog. If he is still being considered have a conversation with him. You can share your desired qualities and he will supply you with a tool that should suit your needs. I'm not one for buying The Mystery Box, but I have yet to hear a negative review of his offerings.
