Seems Joseph Allen and Joseph Allen & Sons are the same manufacturer. One of his sons was born in 1860 and the other in 1866. A coming of age celebration was held for Joseph Jr. in 1881 and reported in a local paper. The Non-XLL trade mark was acquired in 1883. Not too much of a stretch to think the company became Joseph Allen and Sons about that time.
