Any thoughts on this one? Seller does not know if its man made or not. It has saw marks on the sides. Looks like a nice hone.

Coticules are natural stones. The one in the link was glued to a slab of slate, my guess is that what "man made" means in this listing.

The seller says someone emailed him and said it was made from coticule dust. I don't think thats the case but i'm not an expert. It looks to me like a mined coticule.

Man made coticules are made from coticule dust and a binder in the same manner as a barber hone. They can be identified by being reactive to acid. That is, they will bubble when a drop of acid is put on them while a natural mined coticule will not react.

It may be a mined coticule, but the colors look wrong to me. Odds are better of it being a "man-made" coticule, but even that is hard to say from the pics.

Yes I agree with that. With out having it in hand its hard to tell. But the color does look off.

I thought this too. White balance might be off? Does anyone have a man made coticule? That is something that sounds pretty interesting....

I looked at a couple of mine and the texture appears different on the sides. But that might be the rougher cut?

That one is mine. I believe Peter started a thread about them in the hone forum awhile back.
