Thanked: 1The hone with holes
http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-HONE-YOUR-O...QQcmdZViewItem
It looks maybe like it was patented in 1910 which makes the comment, "There's nothing like the good old fashioned razor for easy shaving", quite interesting. I wouldn't have thought a straight razor would be considered an old fashioned razor in 1910. Of course that's the patent date, the actual manufacture date might be much later.
The other interesting comment on the packaging says "No skill needed - you can't overhone".

Thanked: 4I looked at "other items" from the same seller... he seems to have a truckload of nice gear to get rid of.

Thanked: 1I have one of these.
It's written you can hone "round and round or anyway at all so long as you keep it flat.
Also says you cannot overhone as "those little holes will trim off the roughness or WIRE EDGE and leave a keen, smooth (etc)"
sadly I've never gotten to use it yet, my razors are fine for the moment.

Thanked: 1It's carborundum and feels fine but cuts respectably.
I forgot about a filarmonica that I never did get shave-ready.
It's small, an easy fit in the palm of your hand, but it took my 7/8's from too dull to sharp enough to pop arm hairs in 20 circles each side and about 15 or so passes (I didn't count exactly, sorry). Can't shave test it atm.
I like it. FWIW, I am new to honing and find fillies to be a tougher blade of my bunch to hone well.
As for the holes preventing overhoning, I can see the logic there, but who knows what's real and what's sales pitch. (in 1910 I guess 50 cents was a lot )
edit: LOL, crap, I bought the one in your link, that was by chance, sorry.Last edited by Friggin Joe; 06-07-2007 at 06:36 PM.

Thanked: 1Thanks for the report and don't worry about buying the one in my link. I wasn't going to bid on it. I just thought it was a fascinating piece and found some of the text on the box to be interesting.
I'm always interested in learning about things and this was one of those things.
