    Default eBay Shumate 135

Just picked this up on eBay as a first to try my hand at sharpening a razor. Now, I only have Barber hones and a pasted paddle, but I'm going to try nonetheless. I don't think it needs major restoration so I believe I should be OK. Hey, it was less than $10.

    What are the collective thoughts?

Shumates are generally nice if underrated shavers. I would be cautious about the scales tough if the pieces is broken near the pivot the blade could come loose while you are sharpening it, which is not good.
So other than that you will have some honing to do. not sure about it but it might be a frowning blade.

but it should provide you with good practice.
    Be just and fear not.

Good luck! It's tough to tell from the picture but there appears to be a decent bevel. Depending on the condition, it may take a while to get it shave ready edge on a barber hone, but don't give up. Let us know how it goes...if anything it is a good razor to practice on. Just be careful with that broken scale that the blade doesn't dislodge while honing.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm going to give it a try; like I said it was only $10. I keep looking at the picture closely and I don't think there really is a frown to the blade, but I won't know for sure until I arrives.

I have a coarse barber hone and a med/fine hone so it should be a fun challenge.

You can do it with a barber hone, just takes more passes.
I honed an ebay Kropp to shave ready condition with a Swaty.
