    Default Curses!

    I currently own exactly one razor that I can shave with, a JA Henckels #9. I really like it and have been keeping my eye out for more of the exact blade. I want to make a 3 (or more?) day set of #9s with custom scales. It's kind of a long term project that requires lots of new skills (or purchased services) but whatever. Imagine my excitement when I see this item come up:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...:B:ONA:US:1123

    Now, I know that it looks to be in fairly rough shape, but I figure if I get it for cheap and can restore it, all the better, right? (I couldn't give a rat's ass about the mug.) I don't really mind a little bit of pitting left after restoration because it gives the razor a battle weary look that kind of works in my mind. Unfortunately, someone else has started bidding on it. I can't find the name anywhere on SRP (joermrz) and they've only won 1 item a year and a half ago on Ebay. I'm concerned that someone who doesn't know anything about razors saw "Vintage WWI" and now thinks they've found a $250 treasure that just needs a few minutes with a rag.

    </rant>

    The auction ends in 9 odd hours. I figure my best bet now is to try and snipe it near the end. If they've only got 1 piece of feedback, maybe they're inexperienced enough that sniping will be tricky enough to work. Also, on the off chance, is anywhere here the mystery bidder?

    Be prepared to spend at least 50 if you want the razor...But I hope you don't have to spend more than 20 dollars!

    Oy. $20 was my mental target as well, but with $7.47 for shipping, there isn't much wiggle room. It's gonna be tough drawing the line on this one...

    On one hand, I really want more of those #9s. On the other hand, that one is hardly in mint condition. Gah! The sweet horribleness that is RAD.

    I feel for ya. It would be easier for you could count on the pictures and descriptions as being accurate. (Like you can on SRP.) But since you can't you may think "Oh I'll go a few bucks beyond what I wanted to bid, it looks like a great razor" and BAM, lemon. Of course, if I luck out and win this for a reasonable price I'll recant on all of this.

    Boom, headshot! Apparently that guy doesn't quite know how Ebay works - or he had a really low max bid. Either way he outbid me by 50 cents and didn't respond when I upped the bid at 10 minutes remaining.

    Shop victoriously indeed! Now I just have to hope the razor lives up to the pictures, such as they are...

    Cool, congrats, you got what you wanted for pretty decent price.
    I am just not sure why do you want more of the same razor, but, hey it's your razors and your money

    Well, I have this project in my head that I would love to see to fruition. (Though we all know how rarely things work out like planned.) I want to get three of these blades, restore them as best as I can and then make (or have made) custom scales. The scales would have inlay that say I, II, and III. Then I'd make a nice box that holds the three razors, a bowl of soap, a brush, and a small paddle strop (maybe a barber's hone too?) . Then I'd have a nice travel/display box. I can imagine that some people here might like that idea in general but would have three extremely different razors instead. For all I know I'll decide to do that as well, in which case a nicely restored Henckels would probably be a good $30-$40 newbie razor.

    Also, an identical twin having twin twins? The wordplay is too funny to me.
